HOW DO PREORDERS WORK?
Preorders consist of 2 phases; during the first phase, the preorder is Uncapped which means that the quantity of pieces available is unlimited. This phase is important because it allows us to gauge and decide how much stock to have produced, and ordering during this period is the best way to ensure that you'll get the items you want without worrying that they'll go out of stock later. At the end of the Uncapped Preorder phase, we'll then count up the totals of everything preordered and place the production order with the manufacturer. Typically we will have the amount preordered, plus some extras produced. After the production order is placed, the preorder phase will become Capped, which means that the amount of stock available is set/fixed and from that point forward, people will only be available to order from the quantity of extras that we planned for.
TL;DR you can still order after the Uncapped phase is over, but the amount of stock available will be limited. Also preordering during the Uncapped phase helps us out with figuring out how much stock to order, and also helps fund the production!
ARE ANY PREORDER ITEMS LIMITED EDITION?
Unless specifically declared/marked as Limited Edition, all new items will function this way: if there is still strong interest from a lot customers in an item after the first batch is produced, and continuing on, then the item will probably get another batch made and won't be limited edition. If public interest in an item isn't strong enough after the first batch, that item probably won't be brought back for a second run.
Occasionally some items might be marked as Limited Edition from the start (like the Year of the Rabbit collection, for example). In these cases, Limited Edition means that only one batch is intended to be produced, and will not be rerun or restocked again after that first run is over.
HOW DOES PREORDER SHIPPING WORK?
For Domestic USA orders: if your order contains only preorder items, your items will ship when the preorder items are ready. If the preorder items end up being ready at vastly different dates (say you ordered a shirt and a plush, and the shirt is ready a month before the plush is) then the shipping for the items may be split so that you'll get part of your order earlier. If the preorder items are ready at relatively similar dates, your order will ship all at once when everything is ready to go.
If your order contains a mixture of in-stock and preorder items, the in-stock items will ship first unless there are unusual circumstances. The preorder items will then ship when they're ready to be sent out!
For International orders: due to the high cost of international shipping, as well as the necessary compliances with customs paperwork that needs to be translated properly between order data and shipping labels, any orders containing preorder items will ship when all items in the order are ready to be sent. This means that if your order contains a mix of in-stock items and preorder items, the in-stock items will not ship until the the preorder items are ready so that they can all be sent at once. If you need in-stock items to arrive earlier, please place separate orders.
